Making a Guage Swatch
It is very important to work a guage swatch so your crochet project will be the correct size, and to make sure you will have enough yarn to finish the project.
Guage means the number of stitches per inch and number of rows per inch.
Hook sizes given in instructions are guides and should never be used without making a 4" x 4" sample swatch to check guage.
Measure the swatch and if the number of stitches and rows are fewer than indicated in your pattern, your hook is too large. Try another swatch with a size smaller hook.
If the number of stitches and rows are more than incicated, your hook is too small. Try a larger hook.
This is also very important when substituting a different yarn than what is called for in the pattern.
Happy Crocheting!!!
