Get Set and Weave Placemats

Ready...Get Set...WEAVE!

For this month's Yarn Exploration, we want to introduce our super-thick Mop Cotton and the wonderful placemats, runners, and rugs you can weave with it.

Mop Cotton is a very bulky yarn which is a wonderful choice when needing a very thick weft. I've seen patterns call for doubling, tripling, or even quadrupling yarns to achieve a thickness needed. With Mop Cotton, you have the thickness in one single strand.

Mop Cotton is a 6-ply yarn with a soft twist. I love the sturdy fabric I can weave with it!

Mop Cotton Overview

  • Material: 100% Cotton 6-ply
  • Yarn Weight: Very Bulky
  • Approximate Yardage: 150 yds/lb
  • Sett: 2-3 epi (better used for weft)
  • Country of Origin: USA

We have something exciting to share for this month's Yarn Exploration project featuring Mop Cotton! We will be weaving a set of highly textured rep weave placemats.

Rep Weave, or "Ripsmatta," is a warp-faced weave that highlights the dense, tight sett of the warp while letting the weft yarn show through slightly. It’s ideal for creating durable, textured fabrics like placemats, runners, and rugs.

Rep weave is fun and easy to weave and, yes, it is plain weave so any style of loom can be used.

The warp yarn will need to be spaced close together and the weft consists of alternating 8/4 Cotton and the thick Mop Cotton.

Traditional rep weave uses many fine warp threads that completely cover the weft. The warp is very dense and requires many shafts.

Modern rep weave is what we will be focusing on in this project and makes it easier for rigid heddle and all types of looms. It allows the weft to slightly show through so the color of the weft is also part of the design. Using multiple colors in the warp allows you to add more interest to the design.
