American Maid™ Story

American Maid Yarn

American Maid yarns are a central part of our commitment to sustainability in our cotton yarns. These yarns are completely American Made: grown, spun, plied and shipped entirely in the US.   We are delighted to support American Farming and Production efforts while we make a beautiful yarn available to you.  We have naturally colored cotton yarns as well as natural and bleached white yarns in multiple sizes.  Creating sustainable yarns is very important to us.

All of these American Maid™ yarns are made from cotton grown here in the American south and southwest and spun in the US.  The cotton never leaves the US during its whole journey from the fields, through the multi-step milling process to our warehouse in Idaho. The brown and green cotton is grown in New Mexico and Texas. The white cotton is Organically Grown from the Texas Organic Cotton Marketing Cooperative.  The yarn makes multiple stops along the way from the field to your door, and we supervise the yarn through the whole process.  It is an amazing journey!

The Brown and Green yarns become darker when washed, especially in alkaline water.  Add baking soda to a sink full of warm wash water and watch the color deepen. The first time you wash these yarns, the wash water will be pretty dirty.  This is the first time that these yarns have ever been in water before, and you will be washing off the dust of the fields when you give them their first bath.  The colors will continue to change over the lifetime of your woven items.  The more often you wash and dry something, the more the color will change.  The green yarns are more dynamic than the brown yarns.

The American Maid™ yarn seems to have its own character.  Most people don’t have any issue with absorbency with the American Maid™ Yarns after they wash them the first time.  However, some users report that their towels aren’t as absorbent as they would like.  If you have this issue, try these solutions:  1.  Don’t use fabric softener in the rinse water, or dyer sheets when you put the towels in the dryer.  The additional chemicals seem to increase the water repellency of the American Maid™ yarns.  2.  Wash the towels in hot water.  This helps eliminate any of the naturally occurring waxes on the cotton and any remaining machine oil.  3.  Because we all have different settings on our hot water, if the towels are still not as absorbent as you would like after using hot tap water, boil the towels for up to 10 minutes.  The additional heat will remove any remaining wax and make the towels wonderfully absorbent.

We hope you enjoy using these yarns and please let us know your stories with them!  We are so excited to be supporting the US textile industry, and we do everything in our power to make high quality yarn.
