Scottish Thistle Towels
Designed by Susan Kessler Simpson and featured in The Magic of Summer and Winter Weaving.
The Scottish thistle has been a national emblem of Scotland since the 1200s, representing strength and resilience. With its striking purple flower and prickly nature, the thistle is a fitting symbol for the hardy spirit of the Scottish people.
Legend says that a barefoot invading soldier stepped on a thistle during a surprise attack. His cry alerted the sleeping Scottish soldiers, giving them time to prepare and defend themselves. Whether legend or history, it makes the thistle an especially fascinating symbol to weave into these beautiful towels.
Weave Structure: summer and winter
Yarns: Aurora Earth 8/2 Cottons natural, bright red, copen blue, kelly green, and purple.
Equipment needed: 8-shaft loom; 17” weaving width; 10-dent reed; 2 shuttles; 3 bobbins.
Finished Dimensions: hemmed towels 16.5" x 25".
